More baby bird pictures

I realized when someone asked that I never explained where our feathered friends were. They are under the eaves of our front porch. We put the box there after they made a horrible mud mess in previous years. They didn't use it last year, so we weren't sure that they would. As for the pictures, I'm able to stand on the porch step, zoom in and raise the digital camera so that I can sort of see the direction in the view window. Then I click. The little ones aren't afraid of us at all and mom and dad seem tolerant of us. (After all, they did take over the nest knowing we went in and out of that door!) The little ones have now started flying lessons. The two on top of the house have been out for short flights, the rest haven't yet.

And here's mom or dad bringing a snack.

Oh they bring back memories! Many years ago, my husband brough home a baby swallow hat had tumbled from his nest, we named him Ciba, for Ciba Geigy, where he was born. We fed him baby bird puree with an eyedropper and he grew quickly.

He used to fly around the house and land on us for a cuddle. Fihally, one day we hovered around the screen door to get outside, so we let hin out. He flew about the yard for a while and came cheeping at the door to be let in. This went on for a couple of weeks, he always came back to us for food and comfort.

Finally, one day we let him out and he didn't come back. Even though we had successfully raised a swallow and this was what was supposed to happen - I cried like a baby. I'd look at the photo of him perched on my knee while I read a book, remembering his scratchy little nails.

Thanks for the memory and the smile!

Your knitting is beautiful, but what I'd like to know is where did you get the birdhouse for the swallows? For the past 2 years now we've had a very messy nest built right over our front door. The adults are very! protective of their young aren't they.
